Surface Turbulence Reveals Riverbed Drag Coefficient

چکیده
Abstract Flow in rivers and the coastal ocean is controlled by frictional force exerted on water riverbed or seabed roughness. The typically characterized a drag coefficient C d , which estimated from bulk measurements often assumed constant. Here, we demonstrate relationship between bed roughness surface turbulence that can be used to make remote estimates of . We observe regions with larger result greater turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), transported upward river boils surface. present TKE validate this comparing remotely sensed those situ measurements. Thus, our results provide an approach for estimating bottom based entirely data, including their spatial variability, improve modeling discharge morphodynamics data‐poor regions.

Impact of Breaking Wave Form Drag on Near-Surface Turbulence and Drag Coefficient over Young Seas at High Winds
The effects of breaking waves on near-surface wind turbulence and drag coefficient are investigated using large-eddy simulation. The impact of intermittent and transient wave breaking events (over a range of scales) is modeled as localized form drag, which generates airflow separation bubbles downstream. The simulations are performed for very young sea conditions under high winds, comparable to...

I will deiscuss the drag of particles on granular surfaces by a fluid. I will present simulations using FLUENT of Aeolian saltation under Earth and Mars conditions obtaining among others the static and dynamic threshold shear and the height of the saltation layer as function of the wind strength. A universal quadratic increase of the saturated flux as function of the difference from the thresho...
متن کاملDrag reduction in bubbly Taylor-Couette turbulence.
In Taylor-Couette flow the total energy dissipation rate and therefore the drag can be determined by measuring the torque on the system. We do so for Reynolds numbers between Re=7 x 10(4) and Re=10(6) after having injected (i) small bubbles (R=1 mm) up to a volume concentration of alpha=5% and (ii) buoyant particles (rhop/rhol=0.14) of comparable volume concentration. In case (i) we observe a c...
متن کاملIntermittency in two-dimensional turbulence with drag.
We consider the enstrophy cascade in forced two-dimensional turbulence with a linear drag force. In the presence of linear drag, the energy wave-number spectrum drops with a power law faster than in the case without drag, and the vorticity field becomes intermittent, as shown by the anomalous scaling of the vorticity structure functions. Using previous theory, we compare numerical simulation re...
متن کاملDrag-And-Drop Surface Composition
A novel approach to drag-and-drop composition of point-sampled surfaces is described which allows a complex surface feature to be interactively selected and dragged to a new target region. We automatically fill the hole left behind and deform the feature such that it conforms to the target surface. Both of these operations are implemented using a new geometric deformation technique which preser...
